car-registration

Are you planning to buy a car but need clarification on the rego? Here is how to check out car registration and can know how to get it in your name and understand the cost.

Checking registration

Before purchasing a car, it is a perfect idea to do a rego check. Vehicle registration details can be easily checked online via Service Australia. You need a vehicle registration plate number to find out

  • Compulsory policy expiry date and third-party insurer
  • Any registration restrictions
  • The registration expiry date
  • Any registration concessions, if there is any additional charge, will apply when transferring to the new owner.
  • Whether registration is canceled or suspended

Registering the vehicle

Every vehicle driven or towed on the roads of Australia should be registered. You always need the following based on whether you have a brand-new or second-hand vehicle.

  • New car – Always get a new registration set up via the dealer.
  • Any used car with interstate or canceled registration needs to be re-registered.
  • You need to transfer the registration into your name for any used vehicle with a registration that is expired less than three months or is current. To skip any surcharge, you need to register within 14 days only.

Additional steps

For imported vehicles

  • Vehicle import approval

You must apply for vehicle import approval from the communications department, regional development, transport, and infrastructure.

  • Check registration requirements

Before importing any car, you must ensure that it meets all registration requirements. Car registration will only be allowed if any requirement is met.

  • Obtain compliance certificate

Any imported vehicle needs to get a compliance certificate from VSCCS licensed certifier.

  • Apply for registration

To get the car registration, you need to follow the below steps. Used the same steps for second-hand vehicles also.

  • Vehicle inspection

Suppose you have a used vehicle whose registration expired less than 3 months ago. In that case, you can easily renew or transfer it in your name. If the car is unregistered or registered interstate, you need to obtain the Australian registration so that you can use it easily in Australia. So, if the car has passed inspection, the inspection examiner will give you a safety check and signed and printed identity. But if your car is non–standard or modified, you also require a compliance certificate from the authorized personnel.

  • Get compulsory third-party insurance.

Getting compulsory third party insurance(green slip) to run your car on Australian roads is mandatory. The authorized insurance provider should issue the insurance, but you are free to compare quotes and choose the one as per your requirements.

  • Prepare the documents

Always ensure you have every document needed to apply for Australian registration. Below is the list of mandatory documents which you should have.

  1. Compulsory third-party insurance / green slip
  2. Proof of entitlement to the registered car
  3. Identity proof
  4. Completed application for car registration
  5. Relevant certification and inspection reports which include
  6. Car import approval from the commonwealth government for imported vehicles

Registering a car in an organization’s name

If you are getting a car registered in the organization’s name, then you must complete the ‘representative authority’ section in the application form.

And suppose you are sending someone for the vehicle registration in your name. In that case, you should complete the ‘representative authority’ section on the application for registration, and the representative person should display their identity proof.

However, if you are not recorded in the car registration records of Australia (no car is registered in your name), then you need to attend the vehicle registration process personally.

  • Visit service center

Once the car inspection is done and you have all certifications and other mandatory documents, you must visit the service center for registration.

The authorized people will process your car registration and give you the number plate.

Remember that if there is any doubt, you may be asked for VIIU (vehicle identity and inspection unit) to validate the car’s identity.
